Designer Notes

Anzac Day means a lot to me, my Dad proudly marched every year until his death in 2006, he never missed a year. I grew up in Rabaul, New Guinea, and we lived with WWII every day of our lives. Every street in town had some memory of the war on it, either a tank, a name, a tunnel, an anti-aircraft gun, bombs, torpedoes, cranes, tracks, plane wrecks and pill boxes. Even a Sunday picnic at the beach had a pill box or tunnel in it, even one of our wharves was called the Wreck Wharf because it was a bombed ship’s hull that was filled with concrete and used for small ships. The picture theatre sat beside Admiral Yamamoto’s bunker, there was an anti-aircraft gun next to our Primary school, we played in the tunnels, big and small, and as teenagers we dived on the wrecks doing salvage work. The war reminders were everywhere so we grew up knowing how lucky Australia was, to have been saved from the Japanese. We all knew the stories (well facts), the Tol Plantation mass executions of Aussie soldiers, lined up in front of ditches and shot, many Priests, Nuns and Plantation Managers also suffered the same fate, and those who survived were put in miserable camps. I lived on 2/22 Street, named after the platoon of Aussie Diggers that tried so valiantly to defend our town against a massive force of invading Japanese. The wounded and captured civilian men were all embarked on the Montevideo Maru and being sent to Japan for imprisonment, but the ship was torpedoed and sank of the Philippines, they all died. Until the eruptions of 1994 there was a memorial plaque at the site where the Japanese landed, but it is buried under ash now. This bundle is to remember all the brave, from every country, that have given their lives so we can live in freedom.
